Ashdon Lodge was a perfect example of having to work with an existing landscape and create something new from a mature garden. The previous owner of Ashdon lodge built a Japanese themed garden complete with conifers, acers and Japanese tea room. Deciding what to keep and what to get rid of was a tricky issue. On one hand trees give the garden maturity, but on the other they can be a little imposing.
Having decided what to keep we set about sculpting a natural looking garden with grasses and perennials but with contrasting formality created by clipped box hedges and balls. We also created lots of linear structure with timber pergolas which frame interesting features.
